Realised, Re-imagined
Food is our right
Realised, Re-imagined is a group exhibition which explores the possibilities of a future in which the right to food is realised for everyone.
In Canada, the right to food was legally recognized in 1976, and a Toronto food charter was created over 20 years ago. Despite the fact that all levels of government are obligated as duty bearers to realise this right, 1 in 5 households in Toronto are food insecure, with even higher rates for Black and Indigenous households.
This exhibition brings together the work of visual artists Ehiko Odeh, Nala Haileselassie and Sam Anis, alongside photographs captured by Nabil Shash. The artworks explore themes including place-making, community building, capitalist food systems and land sovereignty. The works are presented in conjunction with audio interviews by food growers, community organisers, and others working toward food justice in the city.
Collectively, the works that form Realised, Re-imagined encourage viewers to consider what we are owed by those in power, and what it means for our food rights to be honoured.
